A1–A2 Vocabulary Spelling

German Word Search - Free Online Vocabulary Game

Wortsuche

Find hidden German words - and learn what they mean the moment you spot them.

What you're practicing

Drag across a letter grid to find hidden German words, and see each word's English meaning as soon as you find it. Word-search play gives you repeated exposure to German spelling and meaning.

Recognizing a word's spelling helps you find it again in a short text. Look carefully at the letters and any umlaut, then read the meaning when you find the word. You can also say a useful word aloud to review its sound.

The more you play this game, the better you will be able to recognize familiar words on signs and in short messages, and remember their spelling when you write. Try recalling one found word after you finish the grid.

Choose a small grid for a break or a larger one when you have more time. Come back on another day to revisit familiar words.

Frequently asked questions

How can I learn common German words?

Meet useful words often and check their meanings. A word search lets you look closely at the spelling, trace the word and read its translation. Return on another day to see which words you remember.

Why does a word search help with German vocabulary at all?

Finding a word makes you look at its letters and their order. The translation then connects that spelling with a meaning. Say a found word aloud, or try writing it from memory after the puzzle.

Is this game timed or stressful?

There is no countdown, score penalty or life limit. Take your time finding a word, trace it and read its meaning. You can stop whenever you need to and return for another puzzle later.

Are there fake words hidden in the grid?

Not deliberately. After each grid is built, every line is scanned in all eight directions against a large dictionary of German words, and grids with unintended real words are regenerated on a best-effort basis. It isn't a guarantee, but it means unintended matches are rare - and if you do trace a real German word, it should count.

What happens when I find a shorter word inside a longer one?

You get credit and a translation card for it. Turm lives inside Sturm, Klage inside klagen, Wort inside Antwort - a curated set of these nested base words is accepted too. It's a small puzzle bonus that also helps you notice recurring letter patterns in German spelling, which pays off later when you're reading unfamiliar words.

What levels and grid sizes are there?

Three: Easy is a smaller grid with fewer words, across and down only; Medium is a bit bigger and adds diagonals; Hard is the biggest grid with the most words. Words never read backwards or bottom-to-top, which keeps the grid readable for learners. The vocabulary is A1-A2 high-frequency German, so beginners can play from day one and B1+ learners can use Hard as a fast warm-up.

Do I need to sign up or install anything?

No. It opens in any modern browser, works on phone, tablet and desktop, and needs no account. It was built mobile-first for touch dragging and runs straight in your browser.
